The much-anticipated total eclipse in Niagara was a bit of a disappointment, with clouds obscuring the view. From the seminary lawn we caught occasional glimpses, with spectacular colour in the clouds around the sun. The moment of total eclipse was astonishing for its darkness and coldness.

But the excitement of a group of Lutheran young adults, visiting from Kitchener, wasn’t dimmed or cooled! Seven young people camped out at Grace Lutheran Church, St. Catharines, to avoid the morning crush of traffic, and then joined two more local students to spend the day at the seminary. In the morning they attended the divine service for the Annunciation of Our Lord, at which we sang these words:
The Lord whom sun and moon obey, / Whom all things serve from day to day,
Was by the Holy Ghost conceived / Of her who through His grace believed. (Fortunatus)

The group then sat in on a Lutheran history class, where they were fascinated by the 19th century debate over predestination. The Director of the Library gave them a tour of the Rare Book Room, and they then had the student lounge as an eclipse-watching base.

Concordia welcomes visitors at any time. If you are interested in studying theology or preparing for the pastoral ministry, it’s best to come when classes are in session so you can meet the students and get the full experience. Contact the Director of Recruitment, Dr James Kellerman (jkellerman@concordia-seminary.ca), to arrange your visit. And don’t wait for the next total eclipse (in 2144)!
