Popular Canadian Lutheran and Issues, Etc. movie reviewer, Pastor Ted Giese (Mount Olive, Regina), will be teaching a short-term course for two weeks at the beginning of January here at Concordia, St. Catharines. The course is titled, Christianity, Fine Art, and the Movies: A Lutheran Approach to Media Consumption, and promises to be an engaging review of the fine arts from a Christian perspective.
The course will run from 9am to 12.30pm, Monday to Friday, 6-17 January 2020. Pastor Giese will be discussing film culture through several movie screenings and looking at religious aesthetics in terms of both fine art and architecture. He is planning a trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario and a visit to several churches as part of the course.
In describing the course, Pastor Giese writes,
The pastor from time to time will need to have a grasp on the interpretation, criticism and use of media as it relates to the public office of the ministry especially when it intersects with congregational life. The course will endeavour to sharpen and provide tools for navigating, understanding and utilising media primarily through the lens of the Scriptures and Lutheran Confessions while employing semiotics and film/art theory.
