From the day they enter the seminary, pastoral students look forward to serving Christ’s church. The annual Call Service is the day when they learn where the Lord is sending them. It’s dramatic and exciting for both the students and God’s people who are to receive them.

Back (l to r): Dr Thomas Winger, Dr Timothy Teuscher, Dr James Kellerman, Rev. Warren Hamp, Dr Thomas Korcok, Rev. Kurt Reinhardt. Front (l to r): Dr John Stephenson, Jason Gillard, Trey Doak, Nigel Prozenko

Jason Gillard had the privilege of hearing this announcement in the place where he was baptised, as the Call Service took place on 27 May 2023 at his home church of Grace, St. Catharines. Jason will soon serve as pastor of Christ Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Grimsby, and Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hamilton, Ontario. Nigel Prozenko, who hails from St Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Halifax, received his placement as pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Regina, Saskatchewan. Nigel was honoured to hear his uncle, Rev. Kurt Reinhardt, preach at the service. A third graduate, Trey Doak, a resident of Denver, Colorado, is awaiting placement in the Missouri Synod.

Unusually, there were no vicars available for placement, though a few young men participating in the service anticipate their time coming next year. Seminary President Dr Thomas Winger was able to praise and thank a range of students for their stellar work in the classroom and beyond, including recognition of graduate Jason Gillard with the Schappert award for pastoral care.

Rev. Warren Hamp (Delta Chi) with brother Rev. David Hamp

A CLTS graduate from 1990, now a senior member of the LCC ministerium, was honoured with the Delta Chi medal. Rev. Warren “Woody” Hamp, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, Kitchener, for thirty years, was extolled as a model “Servant of Christ” for his quiet theological leadership as chairman of the Commission on Theology and Church Relations, for ongoing work in ecumenical dialogue, and for many years of adjunct teaching at the seminary.

Thanks be to God for providing these men as gifts to His church. Please support and pray for them in their work.
