Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary (CLTS) in St. Catharines, Ontario, marked a half-century of theological formation with a landmark 50th-anniversary conference. Held October 19–21, 2026, at the Americana Resort & Spa in Niagara Falls, the event brought together pastors, church workers, alumni, and laity for a historic first: a joint gathering of pastors’ and deacons’ conferences from both the East Region of Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) and the Eastern District of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS).
Held under the anniversary theme “Forming the Future,” the conference focused specifically on the theme “Respectful Theological Dialogue in the Digital Age.” Attendees joined together in daily prayer, worship, and study, celebrating 50 years of God’s guidance since the seminary’s founding in 1976.
A Historic Gathering of Fellowship and Study

The anniversary gathering opened on October 19 with a public Open House at the seminary campus in St. Catharines, welcoming alumni and friends. Activities then shifted to Niagara Falls for the opening of the theological conference. A highlight was an evening social gathering for CLTS alumni from across Canada and the United States.
Over 180 attendees listened as essayists and panelists examined the challenges of confessing our faith winsomely and with integrity in an increasingly digital world. The conference program showcased speakers from both church bodies, including Dr. Thomas Winger, Dr. Thomas Korcok, Rev. Roger Pavola, Dr. Jon Bruss, Dr. Thomas Eggert, Dr. Larry Rast, and Dr. Trevor Sutton.

Worship formed the centre of the gathering, featuring Vespers, Matins, and a Divine Service on Tuesday evening, followed by a celebratory banquet enjoyed by 200 people.
“Reaching 50 years is a testament to the Lord’s unswerving faithfulness to our seminary and to Lutheran Church–Canada,” stated CLTS President Dr. Thomas Winger. “To host our brothers in ministry from the LCMS for this conference in Niagara Falls provided a fitting expression of our joint history and shared confessional heritage as we look forward to ‘Forming the Future’ together.”

LCMS Eastern District President Rev. John Pingel noted: “The close bond between LCMS and LCC seminaries remains a gift to the Church.”
A Rich History
Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary began 1976 as a branch seminary of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne (CTSFW). In its first academic year, eight students gathered in the basement of Resurrection Lutheran Church in St. Catharines under the leadership of Rev. Roger Humann, who served as Dean. Supported initially by CTSFW through visiting professors and library resources, the seminary became an independent institution in 1980.

While founded primarily to prepare pastors to serve across Canada, CLTS has expanded over five decades into a truly multinational institution, drawing students from 25 countries and preparing faithful servants for church bodies across the globe.
